Reduce Stress in times of Unrest – HR Professionals at Home

All of our lives have changed dramatically in a short period of time.  We need to remind ourselves that this is temporary and to be kind not just others – but to be kind to ourselves too. Let’s recall some simple ways to help relieve some of our stress.

What does stress look like?

We all deal with stress in our own ways, and we all react differently (physically and mentally) to stress triggers

What’s in our Control?

Let’s focus on what we can control in an ever-changing world where many things cannot be controlled.

What we already know

We are all well aware of the benefits of eating healthy   to decrease stress.  Not everyone is able to try something new right now for many justifiable reasons.  During times of stress and uncertainty, not all of us are physically and/or mentally up for too much change. Instead, let’s focus on things that are more achievable and more committable to start with:

Stay hydrated

One stress-relieving recommendation is to stop drinking coffee and other dehydrating beverages. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired. However, I wouldn’t suggest telling anyone right now who’s working from home and looking after all their family members to stop their coffee consumption! That being said, it is even more important to drink plenty of water with our dehydrating beverages.  A good rule to follow is for every cup of coffee add an extra glass of water to your daily water intake .

The Little things

There’s no better time than the present to do what we can to lift our spirits.  It also shifts our attention far away from the present situation and reminds us all of the beautiful joys that can be found in it. It’s also the little things that mean a lot to us right now, because it’s still our familiar (and comforting) routine. Take a moment to enjoy a laugh with someone. Remember the little things you enjoy and try to incorporate them as best as you can right now.

Accomplishments
We are all in ‘survival mode.’ Take a minute and pat yourself on the back for anything that you’re achieving right now. Focus on what you are accomplishing and less on what you can’t do, haven’t done, or even forgot to do.  Remember that when stress is high, we can’t expect we’re going to function at our best.  For some of us, keeping busy and/or keeping your mind stimulated can be beneficial. Are you working from home right now? Are you caring for children? Or both? Regardless of your present situation, remember to care for yourself too and make a little time for what matters to you.

 Stretching and Breathing

Stretching   to relieve stress is important for our bodies and our minds.  We also need very little time (and space) to do this. If you’re stationary most of the day, then it becomes even more important.  Try getting the kids to join in too and make it a family affair.  If all else fails, take some deep breaths!  Your breathing  can make a big difference in stress reduction and is a quick way to feel calmer.

In conclusion, we need to look after ourselves in order to look after everyone else- and this is a long list right now!  A part of our profession is caring for and looking after others on a normal workday.  Things have gotten a lot more complicated and intertwined and it’s more important than ever to be kind to ourselves and do what we need to do to be well and keep well.
