As of July 1, 2025, employers must ensure that any washroom facilities provided to workers are clean and sanitary. This includes washrooms, toilets, clean-up areas, urinals, showers, and similar facilities. On construction sites, this responsibility is shared with constructors.
These workplace washroom cleaning requirements in Ontario apply to a wide range of facilities and employers. The requirements do not apply to washrooms in multi-retailer establishments if they are not located within the employer’s leased space and are available for public use.
Starting January 1, 2026, employers must also keep and make available cleaning records. These records must show the date and time of the two most recent cleanings and be:
- Posted in a visible location near the facility, or
- Available electronically (with clear access instructions for workers)
