We are all too familiar with the typical new year’s resolutions that some of us attempt to take on each year. Another idea is to look at taking time to help improve ourselves as HR professionals. HR departments and organizations are continuing to grow and develop and what better time than in a new year for HR professionals to do the same!
Here are some practices to consider:
-
Review HR policies and procedures
It’s important to be consistently up to date with all of the changes that happen in the HR community. Employees will come to us for questions first. By staying on top of current changes we will be an important asset to the organization.
-
Update your employee handbook
This is a simple way to answer employee questions and create transparency when it comes to employee conduct and expectations.
-
Meet with department heads and staff members to gain input on out how the HR department can improve
This is a great way to make employees feel like they have a say within the company. Examples of this are a formalized scheduled meeting, or more casual though a simple survey. Regardless of the format in which you choose, it will make employees feel like they are involved with the organization they work for.
-
Reorganize your personnel files
This one is two-fold: Clean out your own desk and filing cabinets and start the year off organized and up to date, but also ensure that employee’s personnel files are up to date (address, emergency contact information, beneficiary information, etc).
-
Implement training programs
Training programs are a great way to get everyone on board in your organization. This can mean getting all of the Leadership team together for a class, or even just a refresher on employment law.
Understandably, some of these tasks may come across as tedious and time-consuming – but that’s why they need some attention! The key here is to break away from the everyday work life and learn something new or make something better for everyone to benefit from.
